Everything about The Merya Language totally explained
The
Merya language was the
Finno-Ugric language spoken by the
Merya tribe, which lived in what is today the
Yaroslavl region northwest to Moscow (near
Rostov Veliky and
Pereslavl-Zalessky). Next to nothing is known about the language, but it was probably related to the other
Finno-Ugric languages of the region. Meryan probably became extinct in the Middle Ages, as the Meryas were assimilated by the
Slavs. Traces of the language can be found in place names.
